Wooster, OH: A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Indian-American community after three members of a Gujarati family lost their lives in a devastating fire that engulfed an Econo Lodge motel in Wooster, Ohio, during the early hours of July 1. The victims were identified as 48-year-old Hiteshbhai Suthar, his wife Hinaben Suthar, and their 20-year-old daughter Ishani (also known as Isha). The family hailed from Nadiad in Gujarat's Kheda district and had moved to the United States nearly two years ago in search of a better future.
Hiteshbhai worked at the Econo Lodge motel where the family also lived, while Hinaben was employed at a neighboring property. Their daughter Ishani worked at a nearby McDonald's as the family worked tirelessly to build a new life in America.
According to local authorities, the fire erupted shortly after 1:30 a.m. and rapidly spread through several sections of the motel before reaching the roof. Thick smoke and intense flames quickly engulfed the building, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. Emergency crews responded within minutes after receiving the first 911 call at approximately 1:33 a.m., but despite repeated attempts, firefighters were unable to reach the trapped family in time.
In their desperate final moments, Hiteshbhai reportedly called the motel's front desk pleading for help. Motel employee April Graser later recalled the emotional conversation with local media. "He was begging me to get help because they were trapped in the building and couldn't get out. I could hear them crying and screaming," she said. Graser told Hiteshbhai that emergency responders had already been notified and advised the family to turn on the bathroom water and remain inside the bathroom in an attempt to protect themselves from the smoke and flames until firefighters arrived.
Trusting that help was on the way, the family locked themselves inside the bathroom. Tragically, the fire spread too rapidly, and investigators believe all three died from smoke inhalation before rescuers could reach them.
Wooster Township Fire Chief Dallas Terrell described the incident as "a horrible tragedy," saying firefighters risked their lives and made every possible effort to rescue the victims. One firefighter sustained minor injuries while battling what escalated into a fifth-alarm fire.
Authorities confirmed that all other motel guests and employees escaped safely. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The tragic deaths of the Suthar family have left relatives in Gujarat and members of the Indian-American community mourning the loss of a hardworking family whose pursuit of the American Dream ended in an unimaginable disaster.
