New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region and Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday said the documentary series “The Enchanting 8: A Culinary Journey Through the Northeast” will showcase the rich culinary traditions, diverse communities and vibrant cultural heritage of Northeast India to a wider national audience. 

The trailer of the documentary series was officially launched by Scindia in New Delhi at an event organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). Minister of State for MDoNER Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, senior ministry officials and members of the production team were also present.

The documentary series takes viewers on a food-led journey across all eight Northeastern states, exploring the region through its cuisine, communities and people. It highlights culinary traditions rooted in locally available resources and brings out the indigenous knowledge and practices associated with food preparation.

Supported by MDoNER and the North Eastern Council (NEC), the series has been implemented through the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS). It has been produced by Urban Media Productions in association with Filandering Forker Media.

The series is part of MDoNER’s cultural outreach efforts aimed at introducing the Northeast to a wider audience through authentic experiences and stories from the region. Instead of presenting the Northeast through a single culinary identity, the documentary explores the distinct food traditions of its different communities and geographies.

The production involved interactions with local communities and food producers, tracing native ingredients from their origins to kitchens and eventually to the dining table. These interactions have also helped capture the stories, traditions and people connected with the region’s food.

The trailer puts the spotlight on the Northeastern states through their food and the people who prepare and share it. Local voices form an important part of the narrative, while the series explores the ingredients, indigenous knowledge and everyday practices that shape the region’s culinary traditions.

While food remains at the centre of the series, the documentary also takes viewers closer to the arts, culture and landscapes of Northeast India. These elements are presented as part of the wider social and cultural setting in which the region’s food traditions have evolved.
