Chicago: In a stirring display of patriotism and unity, the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA–Chicago) inaugurated its two-week celebration of India's 80th Independence Day by proudly hoisting the Indian National Flag in the heart of downtown Chicago on August 6.
It was an unforgettable and deeply emotional moment as the Tiranga fluttered majestically against Chicago's iconic skyline alongside the Stars and Stripes of the United States. The sight of the two great national flags waving together symbolized the enduring friendship between the world's largest democracy, India, and one of the world's oldest democracies, the United States. For hundreds gathered at the ceremony, it was a moment filled with pride, gratitude, and love for both their motherland and their adopted homeland.
The ceremony commenced with FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra welcoming the gathering and inviting FIA President Hemant Patel and members of the FIA executive committee to the stage. President Hemant Patel warmly greeted community members, distinguished guests, and dignitaries before FIA leaders honored them with floral bouquets. Among those recognized were retired Brigadier Navin Ahuja, FIA Secretary and veteran Arvind Ankleshwaria, Honorable Consul General of India Shri Somnath Ghosh, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, Chicago 50th Ward Alderwoman Debra Silverstein, FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra, former FIA executive Hashmukh Patel, and journalist Vandana Jhingan.
The ceremony began with a respectful rendition of the American National Anthem, followed by enthusiastic chants of "God Bless America" and "Long Live America," reflecting the community's appreciation for the nation that has provided opportunities to generations of Indian Americans.
The most awaited and emotional moment arrived as the Indian Tricolor was unfurled high into the clear blue Chicago sky beside the American flag. As the strains of Vande Mataram filled the air, the audience joined together in song, creating an atmosphere charged with patriotism and national pride. Young participants Shanaya Kapoor, Aashvi Kapoor, Kanakh Sharma, and Bhavya Sharma inspired everyone with their heartfelt performance.
The patriotic spirit reached another peak when six-year-old Dhara Shukla confidently led the Indian National Anthem. As the final notes echoed through downtown Chicago, the entire gathering erupted with thunderous chants of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai!" and "Vande Mataram!", celebrating the sacrifices of the countless freedom fighters who secured India's independence.
Adding to the emotional atmosphere, FIA President Hemant Patel presented a moving rendition of the timeless patriotic classic Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, paying heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending the nation. His performance reminded everyone that India's freedom has been earned through extraordinary courage, dedication, and sacrifice.
Addressing the gathering, Consul General of India Shri Somnath Ghosh spoke about the significance of India's Independence Day, emphasizing the shared democratic values that unite India and the United States. He praised the Indian-American community for serving as a strong bridge between the two great nations while preserving India's rich cultural heritage.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas delivered one of the most memorable speeches of the event, stating that Illinois would be "like a desert" without the remarkable contributions of the Indian-American community. She applauded Indian Americans for their leadership, innovation, and achievements in medicine, research, education, business, technology, and public service. She also presented a proclamation to FIA President Hemant Patel in recognition of the Independence Day celebrations and the community's outstanding contributions.
Alderwoman Debra Silverstein of Chicago's 50th Ward conveyed her warm greetings and congratulated the Indian-American community on this proud occasion.
The celebrations concluded with a spectacular cultural performance by the Twinkling Stars Academy, presented by Vishnu, Shivani, Lakshmi, and Vijay. Their beautifully choreographed "Five Elements Dance" brought Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Sky to life through colorful visuals, graceful movements, and patriotic themes celebrating both India and the United States. The inspiring performance carried a powerful message of environmental stewardship, harmony, and community responsibility, earning a standing ovation from the audience. The remarkable talent and confidence displayed by the young performers reflected the values instilled by their dedicated parents and teachers, making the event a fitting tribute to India's enduring spirit and the vibrant legacy of the Indian-American community.
