Burnaby, Canada: A 28-year-old man of Indian origin was shot and killed in a targeted attack in Burnaby, Canada, prompting police to investigate possible links to an ongoing gang conflict in British Columbia. Authorities have identified the victim as Dilraj Singh Gill, a Vancouver resident who was known to law enforcement.
According to Burnaby RCMP, officers responded to reports of gunfire near the 3700 block of Canada Way shortly before 5.30 pm on January 22, 2026. When police reached the scene, they found Gill suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the location.
Not long after the shooting, officers discovered a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Investigators are examining whether the burned vehicle is connected to the homicide. Police later confirmed that the vehicle is indeed linked to the killing and is considered a key piece of evidence in the case.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has assumed control of the investigation. In a statement, police said the shooting appears to have a nexus to the ongoing BC gang conflict. Sergeant Freda Fong noted that homicide investigators are working closely with Burnaby RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service, and the BC Coroners Service to gather evidence and move the investigation forward.
Police described the incident as deeply concerning, particularly because it occurred in a public area. Authorities are urging witnesses, as well as anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage from the vicinity at the time, to come forward to assist in identifying those responsible and ensuring accountability.
