SPECIAL ISSUE

March 13, 1993: Where are we heading?
Dear Readers:
Dateline Chicago area, circa 1977: An Indian boy visiting Chicago loses his driver’s license. He tells the police that he is scared of going back to Ohio with out a driving license. What if he is stopped? “Don’t worry” the cop replies, “just tell them you’re an Indian. Indians are good people.”
That was then. This is now. The last few years we have seen a spate of incidents that are contrary to the good reputation of our community in general.
An Indian radiologist accused of defrauding Medicare…. An India Medi-cal lab owner involved in prostitution ring… an Indian radiologist accused of attempted rape... An Indian doctor accused of drugging patients and “making out” with them…. An Indian accused or molesting a small girl…. An Indian lawyer accused ‘green card’ scam.
This is not an indictment of doctors, or as a matter of fact, this is not even a judgment call on any one of this incidents mentioned. This is just an expression of thought, because these incidents have a story to tell. The question is which story do they tell?
One thought is that these incidents are a necessary part of the growth process. As the community grows in members, so do the incidents — be it good or bad.
Another thought is that we are just too paranoid and that these incidents are a miniscule part of our overall population. These incidents should be dismissed accordingly.
And then, there is another thought. This thought stems from the fact that Indian in general are successful. These successes breed contempt and resentment. Subconsciously, the local people look for ways to “get even.”
Only recently, the jury acquitted the defendants of the New Jersey ‘Dot buster’ case. The case in which an Indian doctor was beat up in resentment. The real reason of resentment will be found out in the history books.
What causes these actions from educated well-to-do folks? What causes these accusations from local’s against these educated well-to-do folks? Is it their ostentatious life style? It couldn’t be — most of our politicians follow that and we still re-elect them consistently. Is it their conspicuous consumption habits? It couldn’t be — most yuppies are guilty of that lifestyle.
So what is it? Why are so many reputable Indians getting into kinds of trouble that are not becoming of their image created earlier? We can’t think of logical reason. Can you?
Sincerely,
