SPECIAL ISSUE

December 9, 2000: Thank you for your concern
Dear Readers:
We are overwhelmed by the deluge of telephone calls, letters and emails we have received condemning the tone and tenor of Diya Sharma’s e-mail, which we published on the front page of India Tribune last week.
Diya Sharma’s threatening e-mail evoked spontaneous community condemnation. The whole community rose as one in support of us against the threats. Some of the community members even visited our office personally to extend their cooperation and support. We are thankful to all of them. Diya Sharma’s e-mail and a couple of other e-mails with a threatening tone are under the investigation of the police.
We, at India Tribune, believe in fair practice of healthy journalism and denounce blackmail in any form. For the past 23 years, we have never allowed India Tribune to be cowed down by any pressures, nor have we used it for personal gains or settling any personal scores. It has never been a vehicle for settling anyone’s personal vendetta. We never promote any undeserving individuals of institutions nor do we fight shy to support any deserving cause.
Our editorial - “Living in a glasshouse!” - focused on improving services of the Consulate General of India; it was not aimed at belittling the consul general nor was it meant to criticize Surendra Kumar as an individual. It was meant to draw the attention of Surendra Kumar as the Consul General to the bureaucratic hardships that the community members are facing. To that extent, we feel, the purpose of the editorial is more then served.
We assure our readers that our editorial policy will remain issue-oriented and value-based. Regardless of any threats we face, we will hold on to our just ground to fight for the common cause of people, particularly those who are not privileged or influential. As we criticize others, we also welcome any criticism directed towards us. The readers are encouraged to write about anything that they feel strongly. The “Opinions” column is open to all. We assure our readers that we value their views, opinions and thoughts. India Tribune is everyone’s newspaper.
We thank you all once again for your overwhelming concern and support.
Sincerely,

Prashant Shah
