 SPECIAL ISSUE

March 19, 1988: Dividing in the name of unity

Dear Readers:
It seems that we have done it again. We have once again put our personal interests before those of the community. We are once again dividing in the name of unity and concern. We are getting a group of concerned citizens who are concerned alright … but for who, themselves or the community???
As a newspaper, we do not take sides when there are splinters and grievances between organizations. But, for an event like the India Day Parade, we feel an obligation to take a stand - a stand on the issue.
This is how we feel:
(1) The Indian community is too small to host two parades. We do not have the numbers, or the resources. As such we endorse one parade and a good one. Regardless of who sponsors it, there should be only one India Day Parade.
(2)- The Indian community frequents the Devon Avenue for almost all its needs. We indorse the India Day Parade on Devon Avenue. It will benefit the community and the area businesses.
(3) If the current FIA and WSIS leadership can not unite on this issue then they should get out of office and let another person carry the mantle of unity. We are sure there are enough concerned people who would willing to work towards this goal.
And finally, we would like to take an opinion poll on these issues. A questionnaire is published on inside page in this issue. Write to us and air your thoughts. We will publish the opinion poll in about four weeks .. after all, we reflect the community, we are your newspaper.

Sincerely,

Prashant Shah
