October 2, 1999: Gandhi is more relevant now
Dear Readers:
We Indians, wherever we live, owe our identity and recognition as people of modern democracy to the Father of the Nation - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
This October 2, we will be celebrating Gandhi’s 130th birth anniversary. Mahatma Gandhi is more relevant now than anytime in the history. Peace is disturbed everywhere in India.
The current general elections that are supposed to establish democratic government in the country are replete with factional fights, political murders, and attacks on police and para-military forces. The lust for the political power is blinding our politicians and their supporters who are resorting to violence.
It is here Mahatma Gandhi’s advocacy of truth, peace and non-violence is relevant. He lived an austere life and worked for amity among people of all religions. He taught us equality and religious tolerance. But some states in India are witnessing violence based on caste and religion.
At a time when the country is faced with an external threat and internal disturbances, it is important that the people learn to remain united and work for the progress of all. That is what the Father of Nation had dreamed of.
It is time we all rededicate ourselves to these great ideals that Gandhi had passed on to us. The Gandhian legacy must continue. Gandhi is more relevant today than anytime.
Long lives Gandhian legacy.
Sincerely,

Prashant Shah
