Ontario, Canada: A 21-year-old Indian student, Harsimrat Randhawa, tragically lost her life in Hamilton, Ontario, after being struck by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop on her way to work. The fatal incident occurred during a shooting between occupants of two vehicles.
Randhawa was a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton. In a statement posted on X on April 25, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario.” The Consulate confirmed that local police identified her as an innocent bystander and are currently conducting a homicide investigation. They added that they are in contact with Randhawa’s family and are providing support during this difficult time.
According to the Hamilton Police, the shooting took place around 7:30 p.m. local time near Upper James and South Bend Road. Responding officers found Randhawa suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigations revealed that a passenger in a black car opened fire at a white sedan. The shots also struck the rear window of a nearby residence, narrowly missing occupants inside who were watching television. Fortunately, no one in the home was injured.
Authorities are urging anyone with dashcam or security footage from the area between 7:15 and 7:45 p.m. to come forward with information that could assist in the investigation.
