Washington, D.C.: Congressman Shri Thanedar (D-MI), representing Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, has introduced articles of impeachment against former President Donald J. Trump, alleging repeated violations of the Constitution and behavior that endangers democratic institutions. The resolution, brought before the U.S. House of Representatives, accuses Trump of high crimes and misdemeanors through seven detailed articles of impeachment.
Rep. Thanedar stated that Trump's continued conduct, both during and after his presidency, poses a threat to American democracy. “Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s Constitution and our democracy,” said Thanedar. “His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power above public service.”
The seven articles of impeachment allege:
- Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power – This includes denial of due process, defiance of court orders, unlawful deportations, and misuse of the Department of Justice.
- Usurpation of Appropriations Power – Trump is accused of dismantling congressionally mandated agencies and unlawfully withholding federal funds.
- Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression – The resolution cites harmful tariffs and threats of military action against sovereign nations.
- Violation of First Amendment Rights – Thanedar alleges that Trump engaged in retaliatory actions against media, critics, and attorneys for exercising free speech.
- Creation of an Unlawful Office – The establishment of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), allegedly empowering Elon Musk to act outside constitutional bounds, is listed as a grave violation.
- Bribery and Corruption – Trump is accused of interfering in criminal cases, accepting foreign emoluments, and seeking personal and political gain through coercive settlements.
- Tyrannical Overreach – The resolution charges Trump with consolidating unchecked power and undermining civil liberties.
Emphasizing the need for accountability, Thanedar remarked, “This is not about partisanship. It’s about protecting our democracy and ensuring that no one, not even a President, is above the law.”
Congressman Thanedar, who represents Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes, is known for championing working families, education, healthcare access, and economic empowerment, particularly in underserved communities.
