Bhopal: A high turnout of around 80 percent was recorded in the June 12 by poll to Maheshwar assembly constituency in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh.

Rajkumar Mev of BJP and Devendra Sadho of Congress Party are prominent contenders for the seat.

The bypoll was necessitated after Vijaylaxmi Sadho, who defeated her nearest Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Rajkumar Mev by a margin of over 650 votes during the 2008 assembly polls, resigned after her election to the Rajya Sabha.

The counting of votes will be held on June 15.

Maheshwar has been a traditional bastion of the Congress, which had won nine out of the 13 elections held since independence.

BJP candidates won twice from this seat while in two other elections Jan Sangh and Janata Party nominees won the polls.
