Let kids, in-laws know about importance of holidays

Dear Jyothi:

Ours is not a very serious problem, but it is to me and my children.  We always celebrate the American holidays.  This year my in-laws are visiting.  They are causing such a big problem, because they think we should not be celebrating Easter or Christian holidays.  Our kids are making plans for Easter Egg hunts with their friends. My husband’s parents are furious.  My husband won’t say anything to them.

— What do you think?

Dear Friends:

I am in agreement with you.  Let the kids celebrate these fun holidays.  There is a lot of commercialism regarding most holidays.  It is a lot of fun.  Just explain the background of these holidays to your kids, if they are old enough to understand.  Then, talk about the Indian holidays. Encourage your husband’s parents to become involved in teaching the kids about Indian holidays and festivals.  Celebrate all the holidays. Even, when your in-laws are not here, make all the holidays special, American and Indian.  Have them read about these holidays. Have them draw pictures and decorate your home. Cook special foods and have fun!
