Maywood, IL: In recognition of exceptional leadership and service, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine announces that Dr. Gerard V. Aranha, a surgical oncologist, will receive the Stritch Medal, one of the school’s most prestigious awards, during Stritch’s 59th Annual Award Dinner.

The award will be presented on November 20, at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave.

Given to a Stritch graduate or faculty member, the Stritch Medal recognizes outstanding service in medicine.

“Dr. Aranha has been a cornerstone of this institution for more than three decades. His excellence in the operating room, teaching and patient care epitomizes the characteristics of a medal winner. He  is an outstanding example to our students and residents of how a physician can provide optimal care to patients while still reaching out and making a difference in his community,” said Richard L.

Gamelli, dean, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Gerard Aranha was born in Bangalore, India. His father was a distinguished member of the Bombay police force and his mother a homemaker, who was dedicated to serving the poor. He attended the Jesuit-run schools of St. Joseph’s High School and College in Bangalore, and graduated from Bangalore Medical College in 1969. From this fertile foundation grew Aranha’s commitment to his work, family and community.

In 1970, he moved to the United States for his surgical residency, which he completed at Loyola University Hospital. He finished a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn., before returning to Loyola as a faculty member of the department of surgery in 1977.

Since that time Aranha has taught, trained and influenced thousands of medical students, residents and fellows, playing an integral role in the lives of the excellent physicians and surgeons  who graduate from Loyola. Last year he received the Ralph P. Leischner, Jr., M.D. Master Teacher Award, an honor bestowed by the Stritch faculty to those who exhibit excellence in teaching skills, innovations, mentoring and contributions to the school’s educational community.

“Dr. Aranha is not only internationally known for his work in surgical oncology, but is widely admired as a role model for all levels of learners as well as his peers,” said Paul K. Whelton, president and CEO, Loyola University Health System.

He has received numerous honors and awards, including being named one of America’s Top Doctors by the Castle Connolly Guide for several years.
