Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh on January 15 received the “Krishi Karman Award 2011-12,” for being the best performing state in the category of “states with production of over 10 million tonnes of food grains.” President Pranab Mukherjee handed over the award — Rs. 2 crore and a citation certificate — to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Madhya Pradesh, which piped Punjab to the top spot, registered an 18.91 percent growth in the food grain production in 2011-12.

The state produced 21.6 million tonnes of food grains during the period under discussion, compared to 16 million tonnes in 2010-11. Punjab, in contrast, witnessed agricultural growth of only 1.74 percent in 2011-12.

Shivraj Singh’s innovative efforts in the field of agriculture development were lauded at the function.
