New Delhi: Demands for Governor’s rule in Punjab were made in the Lok Sabha on December 10 by Congress members, who alleged that the murder of a police officer in broad daylight in Amritsar by an Akali Dal leader was indicative of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ravneet Singh (Cong) said the incident showed that girls and women were not safe in Punjab as the police officer was murdered in broad daylight for stopping miscreants from teasing his daughter.

“Rapes and firings were the order of the day and the law and order situation was very bad,” he said amid strong protests by Akali Dal members.

He sought police reforms in the state and intervention of the central government through the imposition of President’s Rule.
