March 31 deadline for TASMAC-free highways

Chennai: The Madras High Court has ordered the shifting of all TASMAC liquor vending shops, numbering over 500, from the national/state highways to interior places by March 31.

The first bench comprising Acting Chief Justice R. K. Agrawal and Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar passed the order while allowing a public interest writ petition from advocate K. Balu.

Taking note of the fact that fatal road accidents occurred every four minutes, the bench said that it was directing the authorities concerned to relocate the existing TASMAC shops  and ordered the removal of such shops on the highways to avoid drink driving.
